KEEPING YOUR BRACES CLEAN

Chances are you’re doing a great job brushing your teeth, but you may be wondering, “Am I brushing my braces right?!” Fear Not. The steps in this guide are demonstrated using Clarity™ ADVANCED Ceramic Braces, but you can use the same techniques with whatever braces you have, whether they are metal, ceramic, or self-ligating.

Interproximal
Brush

AN INTERPROXIMAL BRUSH (ALSO KNOWN AS AN INTERDENTAL BRUSH OR TREE BRUSH) IS A GREAT WAY TO CHECK BEHIND YOUR ARCHWIRE FOR ANY REMAINING DEBRIS

Product: An Interdental Brush like the Oral-B® Tapered Compact Interdental

Timing: Approximately 30 Seconds

Instructions: Place the tree brush beneath the archwire in between your brackets. Gently move the tree brush up and down to remove any remaining food debris.

INTERPROXIMAL BRUSH

Water Flosser

MANY PEOPLE WEARING BRACES USE A WATER FLOSSER AS ADDED ASSURANCE THAT THEY'VE REMOVED FOOD PARTICLES FROM AROUND THEIR BRACKETS

Product: Varies. Choose a powered, water flosser

Timing: Approximately 1.5 minutes

Instructions: Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your chosen water flosser. Ensure the water is directed between each bracket and above the gumline (inside and out).

Floss

REMOVE ANY FOOD THAT’S IN BETWEEN YOUR TEETH WITH FLOSS

Product: Dental Floss like Oral-B® Super Floss®

Amount: 18 inches per arch (about an arm’s length)

Timing: Approximately two minutes

Instructions: Position the end of the floss/floss threader in between the archwire and the tooth surface between each bracket.

Pull the floss under the wire completely and gently move the floss forward and backward next to the tooth surface and up and down, between each tooth and just below the gum line.

Product: Oral-B® Power Tip for Oral-B® Power Brushes and toothpaste like Crest® Pro-Health

Amount: Pea-sized amount of paste on bristles

Timing: Approximately one minute

Instructions: Angle the bristles of the power tip just above your gumline and in between each bracket. This will help remove debris hidden between and underneath your braces, each bracket and along the gum line (inside and out).

Tips & Tricks

BEFORE BRACES
Ask your orthodontist for Vanish™ XT Extended Contact Varnish from 3M ESPE. It can be applied before or during treatment and delivers fluoride over time to help prevent white spots when your braces are removed.

START A ROUTINE Everyone’s schedules are different, so when will you clean your teeth? A minimum of three times a day is best. Many people find it easiest to fit into their day when they wake up, after lunch and before bed.

QUICK TIPS

PRACTICE
You’ll get faster at flossing and using a water flosser the more you do it. Don’t get discouraged! Good oral hygiene takes a bit of time, but it is worth it in the end because your teeth will look great!

DENTIST VISITS
Visit your general dentist regularly during treatment with braces for a thorough cleaning to help ensure your oral health is excellent.

For best results, organize your dental cleanings with your orthodontist to align them with a wire change. That way your hygienist has ample access to your teeth.

BE PREPARED
Carry an interdental brush with you on road trips or when you are unable to brush immediately after eating to remove debris quickly from behind your archwire.

EXTRA BRUSHING
Brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush (no toothpaste) at home during activities that require sitting like watching TV or reading a book. It’s a great way to keep your gums healthy during treatment.

TONGUE BRUSHING
If you stick out your tongue in the mirror, you may notice a white film. This is the bacteria that causes bad breath. To clean the tongue, use your toothbrush or a tongue cleaner. Use light gentle strokes starting from the back of the tongue to the tip. Repeat until the white coating is gone. When brushing the tongue, breathe through your nose to prevent a gag reflex.

ABOUT CREST® PRO-HEALTH™ RINSE
Crest® Pro-Health™ Rinse kills 99% of germs that cause plaque, gingivitis and bad breath, all without the burn of alcohol.

Crest® Pro-Health™ contains a clinically proven antibacterial agent, known as CPC, which is attracted to bacteria in your mouth.

CPC interacts with the bacterial membrane and solubilises it, effectively fighting plaque, gingivitis and bad breath for 12 hours.

POWERED WATER FLOSSER
A powered water flosser (water irrigation system) sends a high-powered stream of water where you direct it.

This is especially useful while wearing braces as some foods (like spinach) are sneaky and hide under/behind the brackets.

ABOUT ORAL-B® SUPER FLOSS®
Oral-B® Super Floss® has a hardened end so no floss threader is required.

Alternatively, Oral B’s Glide Floss threader has floss already attached and is available in individual single use packaging.

All glide and Oral B flosses come in predetermined lengths.

ORAL-B® Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 Electric Toothbrush with Oral-B® Ortho brush head
Although manual toothbrushes work, many patients prefer an electric toothbrush especially during lingual treatment.

In certain cases Oral-B® power brushes come equipped with a visual pressure sensor that will activate a red light, identifying that you are using too much pressure.

For best results, use 3M™ ESPE™ Clinpro 5000 toothpaste once a day to help prevent cavities and an everyday toothpaste like Crest® Pro-Health™ Toothpaste at all other brushings.
